The AJ Brown Saga Comes to an End
Welp…it’s finally official. Earlier this week, on June 1st, after the dramatic saga of one of the worst kept secrets in modern sports history, the Philadelphia Eagles have traded all-pro wide receiver A.J. Brown to the New England Patriots, in exchange for a 2028 1st-round pick and a 2027 5th-round pick (the better of New England’s two current 5th-round picks). This officially ends Brown’s Philadelphia tenure, which began a mere four years ago.
In the 2022 NFL draft, Eagles General Manager, Howie Roseman, made a wild trade that sent shock waves through the league. He traded the 18th and 101st overall picks to the Tennessee Titans in exchange for A.J. Brown. Sports analysts lost their minds, Titans fans expressed mixed reviews and Eagles fans rejoiced…the rest became history. As an Eagle for four seasons, AJ Brown put up incredulous numbers, racking up 339 catches on 521 targets (65% catch rate), over 5,000 yards and 32 touchdowns. He became one of the most dominant and accomplished Eagles receivers of this century. It would be doltish to say he didn’t have a substantially positive impact on this team, despite a controversial 2025 performance.
However, Brown’s success did not come without consequence. His outspoken personality, visible sideline altercations, enigmatic social media activity, and everything in between, often fueled speculation about locker-room dynamics and his relationship with coaches and teammates, especially quarterback Jalen Hurts. Warranted or not, those moments frequently became talking points in local and national media, sometimes overshadowing his on-field accomplishments and making Eagles fans wonder when these conversations will finally cease. The aftermath of the official trade hasn’t sat well with many Eagles fans as well. From the “man cave rug”, to comments comparing being an Eagle to a monotonous dead-end job, the falling out rumors and more, it’s easy to see why some fans are comparing AJ Brown to Terrell Owens, sharing similar feelings about his exit the same way as fans did over 20 years ago.
There are mixed feelings of joy and sorrow about this trade, both with justifiable reasons. Regardless of opinions on his personality and handling of this trade saga, the truth of AJ’s achievements as an Eagle shouldn’t be jettisoned into the abyss. As an Eagle, he was an integral part of Philadelphia’s success over the past four years, which is something to be grateful for. Hopefully soon, we can look back on this and laugh about how much this trade saga was dragged out. Nonetheless, AJ Brown’s contributions as an Eagle were monumental, and for that, we say thank you and best of luck to you in this next chapter.
