Pittsburgh Goaltending In The Organization

The Pittsburgh Penguins have goalies, and the depth chart has only become deeper over the offseason with the addition and subtraction of goaltenders in the room. This writing will cover all the goaltenders in the Pittsburgh organization, from the NHL to the ECHL, and explore their potential ceiling from a minor league standpoint.

Tristan Jarry

Jarry had a tough 2024-2025 season; there is no argument there. He was placed on a conditioning stint with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in late October of 2024. After three tough starts and being placed on the bench after letting in three goals just 12 minutes into a game, it was then that General Manager Kyle Dubas laid out a plan for Jarry and placed him on a conditioning stint, which allowed Dubas to keep Jarry on the NHL roster to bring him back up, which inevitably happened.

Jarry was drafted in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round, 44th overall. Jarry split time between the AHL and NHL during his first four seasons. In those four seasons, Jarry played in 141 games for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, amassing a 2.63 GAA and .911 save percentage in that game span over the four seasons. During those four seasons, he suited up for Pittsburgh 29 times, gaining a 3.11 GAA and .891 save percentage.

In the 2019-2020 season, which was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic, Jarry played his first full season in the NHL. He dressed in 33 games and had a 2.43 GAA and .921 save percentage. Since then, Jarry has played in 231 games with a 2.82 GAA overall and a .906 save percentage overall.

Joel Blomqvist

Blomqvist made a splash on the goalie scene during his rookie season in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Blomqvist was drafted in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft in the second round, 52nd overall. In the 2021-2022 season, Blomqvist suited up in one game and posted a 2.05 GAA and .926 save percentage. The following season, he played in one game again and posted a 4.00 GAA and .852 save percentage. In the 2023-2024 season, Blomqvist exploded onto the goaltending scene for the organization. He dressed in 45 games and posted a 2.16 GAA and .921 save percentage. Over the course of last season, Blomqvist was called up to Pittsburgh and dressed in 15 games, gathering a 3.81 GAA and .885 save percentage. He also played in 18 games for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and dressed in 18 games, posting a 2.84 GAA and a .914 save percentage.

Blomqvist is a young and poised goaltender with a calm game. He knows how to read the plays that are coming at him and can anticipate them well. It was announced this week that Blomqvist is to miss the start of the season, being out for four weeks with an injury.

Arturs Silovs

Silovs was acquired by Dubas in a trade from the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday for Chase Stillman and a fourth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft. Silovs is coming off a career year in the AHL, winning a Calder Cup Championship with the Abbotsford Canucks. In the 2021-2022 season, Silovs played 10 games with the Abbotsford Canucks, with a 3.10 GAA and .888 save percentage. Over the course of the next three seasons, Silovs played in 99 regular-season games with Abbotsford. He collectively had a 2.53 GAA and a .908 save percentage. Over the four seasons, he played in 19 games for Vancouver and posted a 2.95 GAA and a .883 save percentage. He did play 10 games with the 2025 ECHL Kelly Cup Champions Trois-Rivères Lions in the 2021-2022 season and gathered a 2.37 GAA and .920 save percentage.

Silovs has the athleticism and composure, and over the last few seasons has worked on his confidence in net, and could serve Pittsburgh well in the long run.

Sergei Murashov

It’s no secret that eyes are on young russian netminder Sergei Murashov. Rightfully so, he had an incredible rookie season. He worked on his development with Wheeling Nailers with goaltending coach Karel Popper and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton goaltending coach Kain Tisi. Murashov appeared in 26 games for the Wheeling Nailers and was in net for eight out of 13 games when Wheeling went on a 13 game win streak in the 2024-2025 season. During his time in Wheeling, Murashov posted a 2.40 GAA and .922 save percentage. When Murashov came to Wilkes, he set a record for the longest win streak by a rookie goaltender with 12 wins. He ended the season with a 2.64 GAA and .913 save percentage in the AHL.

Murashov is an intelligent goaltender and is able to track the puck and play very easily. He is an aggressive netminder and does make it challenging for the opponent to find the back of the net.

Filip Larsson

Before coming to the Pittsburgh system, Larsson played four season overseas for SHL, HockeyAllsvenskan, and Denmark. Larsson appeared in 26 games last season for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and posted a 2.84 GAA and .910 save percentage. He was orginally drafted in 2016 in the sixth round by the Detroit Red Wings. He played in 10 games for the Toledo Walleye and seven games for the Grand Rapid Griffins.

Taylor Gauthier

Gauthier played in the WHL for five years. He dressed in 166 games for the Prince George Cougars and averaged 3.12 goals against average and 0.907 save percentage. In December of 2021, Gauthier was traded from Prince George to the Portland Winterhawks and dressed in 28 games for them with a 2.16 goals against average and .923 save percentage. Gauthier's work ethic and perseverance got him through to signing his first NHL contract. Gauthier inked a three-year entry-level contract with Pittsburgh on March 1st, 2022, and finished that season out with WHL Portland Winterhawks. Gauthier played in 30 games for the Wheeling Nailers last season. He posted record of 18-10-1-1. Gauthier was signed to an AHL contract during the 2025 off-season and it was announced last week that he is starting the season out injured and the timeline is undetermined.

Maxim Pavlenko

Pavelenko is new the Pittsburgh system and is signed to an AHL contract with Wilkes/Barre-Scranton. Pavlenko made a name for himself when he was in net for Kazakhstan for seven games at the 2025 IIHF World Championships. During his tournament debut, and the only victory for the county, he posted a win with 30 saves. In the last two seasons, Pavelenko suited up for HC Ryazan-VDV in the VHL. In 32 games played, Pavlenko had a record of 9-16-1 with a 2.44 GAA and .919 save percentage, and posted two shutouts in his starts.

Jaxon Castor

Before turning to the professional ranks, Castor played at the collegiate level for five seasons at St. Cloud University in Minnesota. Castor played in 53 games throughout his time at St. Cloud and averaged a 2.54 GAA and .906 save percentage throughout the five seasons. Throughout the span of the veteran goaltenders career, Castor has made stops with Florida Everblades, Charlotte Checkers, Atlanta Gladiators, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, and Wheeling Nailers. Castor is set to begin his third full season and third year as a member of the Nailers. In the 2024-2025 season, the goaltender earned his first call-up to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins where he made his AHL debut on January 15th.
