Penguins Bury Phantoms’ Playoff Hopes with Dominant 6-2 Blowout

ALLENTOWN, PA — April 4, 2026

The Lehigh Valley Phantoms needed a win on Saturday night at PPL Center. What they got was a sobering reminder of how steep their playoff climb has become.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins jumped on the Phantoms early and never looked back, scoring three goals in the first 4:00 of the game and cruising to a 6-2 victory in front of 7,967 fans. For Lehigh Valley, fighting for its postseason life in the Atlantic Division, the loss was as damaging as they come.

The tone was set brutally fast. Alex McDonough opened the scoring at 2:17, assisted by Gautheir Klassen and Valtteri Koivunen. Just 18 seconds later, Aatu Huglen found the back of the net for his fourth of the season, with Ryan McGroarty and Hunter Brunicke drawing the assists. Huglen struck again at 3:59 (unassisted) to make it 3-0 before the Phantoms could catch their breath. Lehigh Valley actually outshot Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 10-7 in the first period, but Penguins goaltender Joel Blomqvist was sharp when he needed to be, and the damage was done on the scoreboard.

The second period brought no relief. Huglen completed what would become a hat trick at 7:05of the middle frame, deflecting a feed from Filip Harding and McGroarty to push the lead to 4-0. Matt Calvert added a power-play goal at 11:07 , the Penguin’s only man-advantage conversion of the night, off a setup from Koivunen and Sebastian Aho, stretching the margin to 5-0.

Lehigh Valley finally got on the board at 12:16, as Liam Pederson scored his 23rd of the season on the power play, assisted by Oliver Bonk and rookie Riley Thompson. It was a rare bright spot on an otherwise bleak night, and any hope of a rally was quickly extinguished when McGroarty added Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s sixth goal just 2:29 into the third period that sealed the outcome.

Cole Knuble, a recent pro signing making early impressions with the Phantoms, scored Lehigh Valley’s second goal on a power play at 14:50, with David Jiříček and Bonk picking up the assists. But with the score already 6-1, it amounted to little more than a consolation.

By the numbers, WB/S’s Huglen was the story of the night: three goals, one assist, a plus-4 rating, and the game’s first star. McGroarty was equally dangerous with one goal and two assists at plus-4, earning second-star honors. Blomqvist earned the win with 22 saves on 24 shots. On the other side, Lehigh Valley’s Artur Kolosov had a rough night, allowing six goals on 22 shots in a 60-minute effort.

The penalty log told a secondary story: Wilkes-Barre/Scranton racked up 46 penalty minutes including a game misconduct and abuse-of-officials call on Brendan Imama in the third period against Lehigh Valley’s 20. Despite going to the power play six times compared to the Penguins’ three, the Phantoms converted just twice and spent most of the night chasing a game that had already gotten away from them.

With the loss, Lehigh Valley’s playoff margin shrinks further. The Penguins, by contrast, showed exactly why they remain one of the Eastern Conference’s most complete teams. For a Phantoms squad desperately needing points, Saturday night was a missed opportunity they could ill afford to lose this late in the season.
