Pyotr Kochetov- Where did this kid come from?
Throughout the season, especially in the AHL, you will see new names and faces. For the Carolina Hurricanes organization, one of those names and faces is Pyotr Kochetov. He is a goaltender, and this kid has made a name for himself in such a short amount of time.
Kochetov comes from Penza, Russia and catches left. He was drafted in 2019 in the 2nd round, 36th overall by the Carolina Hurricanes. He is 6’2 and 179 lbs. Before coming to the United States to play this season, he played in the KHL for Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod on loan. He played in 23 games with a 2.23 GAA, .926 save percentage, and his record was 10-10-2 in the KHL.
Before his NHL stint this season, his stats were 13-1-1 and a .921 save percentage. He was sent to back up Antti Raanta through the end of the season and the Canes playoff run. Kochetov made 4 playoff appearances for the Hurricanes, that included games 6 and 7 against the New York Rangers for the injured Raanta. He was sent back to the Chicago Wolves at the end of the playoff run to help the Wolves with a Calder Cup run.
Last night, during the deciding game between Chicago and Stockton Heat, Pytor tallied his first career shutout in the AHL. He stopped 28 shots from Stockton and Chicago had a 3-0 win, and that is taking them to the Calder Cup Finals. The opponent is yet to be determined as Laval Rocket and Springfield Thunderbirds are still playing to decide.
With this win, the Wolves have earned their 8th finals appearance in their young 28-year history. They become the first AHL Team, since the Hershey Bears in 2010, to reach back-to-back final appearances. The Wolves will host Game 1 on Sunday and Game 2 on Monday at the All State Arena.
