Football Is Over

The NFL officially came to a close last night with the Chiefs beating the 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII. They were nice enough to give us an extra quarter to watch (with the game going to overtime,) but we really deserved it (with the 1st quarter ending 0-0.)

But the game finally got interesting in the 2nd half. The game was 10-6 with two and a half minutes left in the 3rd quarter in favor of the 49ers. The Chiefs offensive woes were still striking hard, and they found themselves punting for the 5th time of the game. On the punt McCloud on San Francisco was signaling to his teammates that the ball was coming down near them. Unfortunately for him, rookie CB/special teams player Darrell Luter Jr. didn’t get the signal. It bounced right off his foot! McCloud made the next mistake. He had a chance to fall on it. Instead, he tried to pick it up… Shoulda Coulda Woulda…

The Chiefs picked up the muffed punt and 2 plays later they scored the go-ahead touchdown. Offense picked up for the rest of the game. San Fran drove the ball down the field for a touchdown on the next drive, however… a blocked extra point would allow the teams to trade field goals until the end of regulation. Everyone was set up for the 2nd Super Bowl in history to go into overtime….

And offense continued to flow in OT. San Fran got the ball first. They pounded straight down the field with 12 plays from scrimmage and over seven and a half minutes. But it wasn’t enough. They got stuffed just short and had to settle for a field goal- leaving the game in the hands of Patrick Mahomes… And he did what he does best- lead his team to the end- the end zone, the end of the game, and the end of the season. The Chiefs were crowned Champs once again.

So Now…

Football is over. Some people are sad and just waiting for training camp to start up again. But for you multi-sport Phanatics (like we are here in Philly) we have sooo much to look forward to. The Flyers are Orange hot right now (4-0-0 since the break) and are expected to make some noise in the playoffs for the 1st time in a long time. The Sixers, while potentially spiraling before our eyes, made trades that make them a scrappy team ready for a fight- especially IF Embiid comes pack and plays full potential. And of course, Wednesday February 14th, The Phightens start pitchers and catchers. Football may be over, but Philly sports are just getting ramped up!
