The Flyers Overtake the Oilers by a Three Goal Lead by: Rebecca McCormick
I am going to start out by saying I am not a fan of NHL broadcasts via ESPN+ and/or Hulu. I signed up for ESPN+ the night prior so I would be ready for some action Thursday night. I turned on the TV a few minutes early so I would be squared away when the broadcast actually aired. As I sat there impatiently waiting, the time was just ticking away and no broadcast. I scrambled to restart ESPN+ and that’s when I received THE MESSAGE—This content is subject to blackout in your region! Wait, what? How the hell can a streaming service black out a game being played in my region? That’s the only reason why I subscribed to that particular streaming service! At this point I am beyond pissed. I look at the clock at it’s already close to ten minutes since puck drop. I grabbed the remote and sign up for yet another streaming service—Hulu to be exact. Thankfully by the time I got the game on I hadn’t missed anything.
To be honest, Edmonton is my second favorite team, but I was rooting for the orange and black all the way last night! I mean come on they have McDavid, Draisaitl, Hyman and Nurse. On the other hand, they have Evander Kane, who is a complete shitbag in my opinion, but all in all I was definitely looking forward to the game because I knew it was going to be a good one.
Luckily by the time I was able to tune in I was able to catch that beautiful snapshot by Joel Farabee thanks to the assist from Bobby Brink. Bobby Brink is truly talented, and I was hoping that he would be able to net his first NHL against Edmonton. Brink signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Philadelphia Flyers on April 10, 2022. Unfortunately, Brink had to undergo offseason surgery keeping him sidelined for six months before he was finally cleared for a return at the beginning of January 2023. To get back on track Brink was sent down to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Brink has been a standout since camp and his tenacity is insatiable. He deserves to be out on that ice in my opinion.
The boys were definitely buzzing in the first and that goal by Joel Farabee at 15:50 just intensified their want to come out on top. The first didn’t come without penalties at 17:22 on the clock, Edmonton’s Mattias Ekholm slashed Cam Atkinson. Unfortunately, the Flyers were unable to capitalize on their first of many power-plays.
The second period was the most intense period of the entire game filled with two penalties each and luckily the Flyers were able to kill off both Edmonton’s power plays. Things were heating up on the ice for sure between the two teams. With almost four minutes in, Cam A. made an unbelievable goal with the assist of Owen Tippett. This was Cam’s first goal of the game and second of the season thus far. Atkinson, who missed all of last season due to neck injury, has played a pivotal role with the Flyers. Let’s not forget about that collision between Marc Staal and Warren Foegle just seconds later that kept Staal outfor the remainder of the game with an upper body injury. Zach Hyman with the help of Ceci and McDavid was able to get one passed Hart around the fifteen-minute mark, making it a one goal game. Minutes later, newbie Sean Walker who was traded to the team On June 6, 2023, as part of a three-team trade, netted his first goal as a Flyer with Coots receiving the assist. By the end of the second Philadelphia was ahead with a two-goal lead.
Although Edmonton seemed sluggish throughout the majority of the game, you could really see it as they entered into the third. Thankfully, Philadelphia had a little more pep in their step more so than McDavid and the crew. There is something about the four-minute mark for Cam A., as he netted yet another goal for the orange and black, AGAIN, with Tip and Coots on the assist. This was Atkinson’s first two goal game since March 2022.
A minute later the Flyers were given their fourth and final man advantage of the game and like the rest, couldn’t connect. I also must give credit where credit is due with Hart and an unbelievable 22 saves!
All in all, it was a phenomenal performance from the orange and black. I look forward to seeing more of Bobby Brink the further into the season we get. The Flyers take on the Dallas Stars at the American Airlines Center tomorrow at 8 PM.
