Flyers Steam Forward to 2-0
The Philadelphia Flyers continued their strong start to the postseason with a commanding 3–0 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 2 of their first-round Stanley Cup Playoff series. With the win, Philadelphia takes a 2–0 series lead as the matchup shifts back home for Games 3 and 4.
Philadelphia’s offense came alive in the second period, scoring twice before adding an insurance goal late in the third. Rookie standout Porter Martone opened the scoring, netting his second goal of the playoffs and marking goals in back-to-back games. His performance continues to etch his name into the record books—Martone is now just the third teenager in Flyers history to score multiple goals in a single playoff year, joining Daunius Zubrus and Sean Couturier. Even more impressively, he became the first teenager in NHL history to score the game-winning goal in each of his first two playoff appearances.
Martone’s historic run also places him among elite company across the league. He is just the seventh rookie teenager in NHL history to score in back-to-back road playoff games, alongside names like Wendel Clark, Jordan Stahl, Rod Brind'Amour, Dan Quinn, Brian Bellows and Paul Coffey.
Midway through the game, Garnet Hathaway delivered a crucial shorthanded goal—his first of the playoffs and fourth of his career—while also adding an assist. His goal marked the Flyers’ first shorthanded tally in the postseason since Valtteri scored against Pittsburgh in the 2018 First Round.
Goaltender Dan Vladar was flawless between the pipes, turning aside all 27 shots he faced to record his first career postseason shutout. Notably, the Flyers had not recorded a single shutout during the regular season, making Vladar’s performance even more significant.
Late in the third period, Luke Glendening sealed the victory with an empty-net goal—his first of the series and seventh of his playoff career.
Philadelphia also received key contributions from across the lineup. Owen Tippett registered his first assist of the playoffs, while Travis Konecny added his second assist of the series, bringing his career playoff total to 10 points. Christian Dvorak continued his consistent playmaking with assists in back-to-back games, and Couturier chipped in with his first assist of the postseason and 13th of his playoff career.
With momentum firmly on their side and contributions coming from both veterans and rising stars, the Flyers now head home in control of the series, looking to extend their lead and move one step closer to advancing.
