Flyers Burn Some Leafs
The Philadelphia Flyers have caught fire at just the right time, securing their **third straight victory** with a gritty 3-2 shootout win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night at Scotiabank Arena. This triumph marks the team's longest winning streak of the 2025-26 season so far, injecting much-needed momentum into their push for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
Dan Vladar was the hero in net for Philadelphia, turning aside 29 of 31 shots through regulation and overtime before stonewalling the Leafs in the shootout. His performance earned him the win and highlighted the Flyers' resilience on the road against a divisional rival.
The game remained tightly contested throughout. Toronto struck first in the opening period with Dakota Joshua netting his seventh goal of the season. Christian Dvorak answered for the Flyers with a power-play tally—his 13th goal of the year—tying things up before the first intermission. Dvorak has been particularly effective against Toronto this season, collecting three points (2g-1a) across the three-matchup series.
The second period stayed scoreless, but the third saw both teams trade markers again. Noah Cates delivered a key goal for Philadelphia, while William Nylander responded with a power-play strike for the Leafs to force overtime at 2-2.
In the extra frame, neither side could break through, sending the contest to a shootout. The Flyers proved clutch once more, converting two of their attempts—including a decisive goal from Trevor Zegras—to seal the victory. It marked Philadelphia's sixth shootout win of the season, ranking them second league-wide in that category.
Cates was a standout performer offensively, scoring and adding an assist to push his personal point streak to four games (2g-3a). This was his fifth multi-point effort of the campaign, underscoring his growing role as a reliable contributor.
Milestones added extra meaning to the night. Nic Deslauriers suited up for his 700th NHL career game, while Bobby Brink celebrated his 200th, chipping in his 13th assist of the season. Rookie Denver Barkey also contributed with his eighth assist, bringing his young season total to 10 points (2g-8a).
The Flyers wrapped up their season series against Toronto with a 1-1-1 record, showing they can compete with the high-powered Leafs despite dropping the first two meetings. Coming off a strong 3-1 win over the Boston Bruins on Saturday—where they snapped Boston's lengthy point streak—this latest result gives Philadelphia back-to-back road successes and a rare three-game winning run.
With the trade deadline approaching and the playoff chase heating up, the Flyers are suddenly playing their best hockey of the year. Vladar's goaltending, timely scoring from depth players like Dvorak and Cates, and success in the shootout have provided a spark. If they can sustain this surge, the orange and black could make things very interesting down the stretch.
