Wardrobe Malfunction

The Philadelphia Flyers have been an iconic franchise in the National Hockey League since 1967. Fan or not, everyone recognizes "flying P" as soon as they see it. The Flyers have also had a number of different jersey combinations and colors over the years. On the internet this last week it has been reported (reported by GTAC13Jerseys on Twitter) that the team is going to have new uniforms starting in the 2023-2024 season. So it got me thinking, since the Flyers went to wearing their home Orange and road White's (current setup 2009-present), what are my top 5 favorite goals in these uniforms? Took some time but here are my top 5 goals scored in the Flyers Orange or White sweaters from 09-now.

5- Ivan Provorov

OT winner against NYI in 2020 Playoff Bubble (White Jersey)

I think we can all agree that 2020 is a year we all want to forget. Strange and weird times all around, but it did give us hockey in the middle of the summer, a somewhat return to normalcy during the Covid lockdowns. The NHL paused their season in the beginning of March as the pandemic began to wreak havoc over the globe. The league decided to finish their season and resume play in late July. The Flyers would capture the top seed in the East after sweeping their 3-game round robin stage. After barely beating the Canadiens in round 1, Philadelphia would begin a 7-game series with the New York Islanders. New York would hold a 3-2 series lead and would look to bounce the Flyers out of the bubble up in Canada. Philadelphia would tie the game at 4-4 in the 3rd period. One extra frame would not be enough, so it was off to double OT. Islanders would have the puck in the offensive zone when D-man Scott Mayfield would have his stick break sending Philly in the other direction with numbers. Kevin Hayes carried the puck down the left side going around the net and would find the trailing Provorov just above the slot, and the Flyers defenseman picked the top corner giving Philadelphia the 5-4 win and forcing a game 7.

4- Wayne Simmonds

Hat trick vs Rangers in 2014 Playoffs (Orange Jersey)

The start of the 2013-2014 season for the Flyers was anything but great. The team started 0-3 and fired Head Coach Peter Laviolette. Still, rock bottom had not been hit yet. That came one night in November thanks to a 7-0 loss at home to the Washington Capitals, a game that saw many fights including the goalies and fans chanting for members of the Philly front office to lose their jobs. Despite all of that turbulence Philadelphia still managed to make the playoffs in 2014. Their opponent would be none other than the New York Rangers. The blue shirts would hold a 3-2 series lead looking to knock out the Flyers in Philly in game 6. Luckily for the Flyers Wayne Simmonds was not going to be eliminated on his home ice. The tough winger for Philly would score not 1, not 2, but 3 goals in the Flyers 5-2 victory. In classic Simmonds fashion all 3 of his goals came right around the blue paint of the net. A great playoff win and a great playoff hat trick, and it was even better coming against the Rangers.

3- Scott Hartnell

OT goal against PIT (0.9 seconds left) (Orange Jersey)

Anytime the Flyers can get a win over the Penguins it's a great day. On this Sunday afternoon in March of 2012 plenty of Flyers fans got to celebrate their St. Patrick's Day with the rare hockey buzzer beater. Philadelphia hosted their biggest rivals the Pittsburgh Penguins in a matinee at the Wells Fargo Center. A game that was tied 2-2 and less than 2 seconds away from going to a shootout, Scott Hartnell takes the pass from Danny Briere in stride and rips a shot over the glove of Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury to give Philly the 3-2 win. Hartnell scored the goal with 0.09 seconds left on the clock.

2- Claude Giroux

Breakaway goal at Boston (White Jersey)

The Flyers were of course on hand to witness the Boston Bruins hoist their 2011 Stanley Cup Championship banner to open up the 2011-2012 NHL season in Boston. The Bruins swept the Flyers in the 2011 playoffs on their way to the franchises 6th Stanley Cup. However, someone forgot to tell the Flyers that they were supposed to be the sacrificial lamb that night and let the B's soak in their glory for one more evening. Philly gets the 2-1 in the game, and it was the first goal from the Flyers that is my 2nd favorite goal in these uniforms. With just under a minute remaining in the first period Chris Pronger hits Jaromir Jagr in the neutral zone with the breakout pass, and the legendary winger puts a perfect pass on the tape of the streaking Claude Giroux who then splits a pair of Bruin defenders and dekes goalie Tim Thomas and deposits the puck into the empty cage, all while crashing into the post. This would just be the start of a great season for Giroux who would finish with 93-points that year.

1- Mike Richards

"The shift goal" (Orange Jersey)

No surprise here that my favorite goal scored in these uniforms comes from my favorite Flyer of all-time Mike Richards. The former Captain played with heart every single shift he was on the ice and none more evident than in the 2010 playoffs. While killing a penalty against the Montreal Canadiens, Richie plowed through Marc-Andre Bergeron to start an odd-man rush. After the puck went back in the Flyers end, former Flyer Claude Giroux dumped the puck out of the Flyers zone and Richards went full steam to retrieve the loose rubber, all the while Montreal goalie Jaroslav Halak came out of his crease to try and play the puck. Halak would collide with his own defenseman and the puck would follow Richards towards the empty cage where the Flyers Captain tapped in the backhander with ease sending the building on Broad Street into a frenzy.

This was a fun article to write. There were a lot of fun goals to go through. That being said when we look back at this era of Flyers uniforms it should be viewed as a dissapointment. The franchise altered seasons of being in the playoffs. Hopefully with new jerseys allegedly on the horizon let's hope that it brings some better luck to Broad Street because let's face it, it really can't get much worse. I'm sure you may have your own favorite goals by Flyers players during this time in these sweaters, let me know, tweet them at me at @A_Varrasso216 on twitter.
