A New Era of Penn State

A new era begins this upcoming for the Lions in Happy Valley after what fans summarize last season as a disaster. After losing to schools like UCLA, Northwestern, and Iowa, the Nittany Lions fell from the rankings and the dreams of having a deep run in the playoffs were gone. With the season ending injury of quarterback Drew Allar and the firing of head football coach James Franklin, Penn State was left in a state of uncertainty. Even with the unfortunate turn of events, Penn State was still able to win the last 3 regular season games against Michigan State, Nebraska, and Rutgers and was even able to win the Pinstripe Bowl against Clemson under the leadership of interim coach Terry Smith.

One of the biggest news to come out of Penn State was the hiring of former Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell. With a respectable record of 72-55 in 9 seasons with the Cyclones, Campbell chose Penn State seeking a mission to improve the program and leave his legacy. With positive relations with Athletic Director Pat Kraft and President Neeli Bendapudi, Campbell knows his responsibility and fans are looking forward to a new leader of the team.

Campbell was not the only to come from Iowa State as his movement brought about many Cyclones to follow him to Penn State. 24 players and 9 staff from Iowa State followed Campbell which shows his popularity and trust in leadership. One of the biggest transfer players is senior Rocco Becht who has played 39 career games at Iowa State with a record of 26-13. As of now, Becht is regarded as one of the most experienced players and fans are looking forward to his leadership and skillset he has evolved over his time at Iowa State.

Another key player coming from Iowa State is safety Marcus Neal Jr. who is a 4-star portal addition coming off his sophomore season. It is projected that Neal will replace Zakee Wheatley in the secondary position for the Lions and will have a major impact in the defense. During his time at Iowa State, Neal developed into one of the Big 12’s top young defensive backs, earning a reputation for his physicality, versatility, and ability to make plays in coverage.

One of the last topics of discussion of the “New Age” is the renovations occurring at Beaver Stadium. The $700 million dollar renovation aims to replace the West Side of the stadium and upgrade stadium infrastructure and fan experience for the more than 100,000 fans.. Although the renovations to Beaver Stadium will not be completed by the end of the upcoming season, their timing could not be better. Combined with the arrival of a new head coach, the ongoing transformation of the iconic venue signals the beginning of a new era for Penn State Football. As the program enters a new chapter on the field, the completion of the stadium project will stand as a symbol of its renewed vision and ambitions.
