Ryan Warsofsky: College Player to 2-time Calder Cup Coach

Ryan Warsofsky, a young coach at 34 years old, has led the Chicago Wolves to a Calder Cup for the 2nd time in his short career on Saturday evening. Let’s talk more about his career leading up to this point:

Playing Career:

Ryan played as a defenseman who shot left when he played in college. He played for Sacred Heart University, an NCAA school, from 2007 through 2010. During his time with Sacred Heart University, Ryan totaled 27 games played, 1 goal, 3 assists, and 32 PIM. He then went to Curry College, an NCAA III school, and played 17 games in his first season with 3 goals, 13 assists, and 30 PIM. During the 2010-2011 season at Curry College, Ryan was the Alternate Captain and played in 27 games totaling 9 goals, 18 assists, and 61 PIM. In 2011, Ryan took a different route, he went to play in the Netherlands for the Turnhout White Caps. He played in 20 games with 7 goals, 12 assists, and 52 PIM. During that same season, Ryan played 3 games for the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees of the Canadian Hockey League. He also went on to play for the Cape Cod Bluefins in the Federal Hockey League for 1 game.

Coaching Career:

During the 2012-2013 season, Ryan was brought on to Curry College staffing team as the Assistant Coach. For the 2013-2014 season, Warsofsky went to the ECHL team South Carolina Stingrays where he was the Assistant Coach until the 2016-2017 season.

During the 16-17 season, he was named Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations and continued those titles until the end of the 17-18 season, where he became the Assistant Coach of the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL. He helped lead the Checkers to the 2018 Calder Cup. After Mike Vellucci’s departure for the AHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, he was named Head Coach of the Charlotte Checkers in the shortened 2019-2020 season.

The Carolina Hurricanes switched AHL affiliates and became affiliated with the Chicago Wolves, Ryan went with them and was still in the position of Head Coach during the 2020-2021 season. He also was Head Coach of Little Rhody HC U16 of the World Youth Championship. During the 2021-2022 season, Ryan led the Chicago Wolves to a 50-16-10 record. They clinched the Central Division. They won the Western Conference Finals over the Stockton Heat during Playoffs. During the 21-22 playoffs, the Wolves outscored opponents, 76-35, during 18 playoff games. On Saturday, June 25th, 2022, The Wolves beat the opponent, Springfield Thunderbirds, in a 4-0 shutout to win the Calder Cup.

Ryan is coming from North Marshfield, MA, and has a hockey family. He has 3 brothers- Adam, Jarod, and David- who all have played in either college hockey or professional hockey. David Warsofsky has appeared in 55 NHL games from 2014 through 2018. He also spent most of the 2021 season with the Wolves. Job well-done Coach Warsofsky!
